Customer Review Summary
The Austrian Audio OC818 Dual Set Plus is an exceptional pair of microphones that have quickly become my go-to choice for a wide range of applications. Initially purchased for overhead and piano recording, they have proven to be versatile enough for nearly any source, often surpassing even the renowned U87 in my setup.
The sound is incredibly natural and balanced, making them suitable for vocals, acoustic instruments, and even spoken word. When compared to other high-end microphones like the Schoeps MK2 and AKG C414 XLS, the OC818 holds its own, delivering a detailed and enveloping sound that is hard to beat, especially considering their price point.
In blind tests, the OC818 consistently impressed me, often coming out as my preferred choice over other established brands. The microphones excel in clarity and resolution, providing stunning results right out of the box. The ability to adjust polar patterns and proximity effects post-recording adds an invaluable level of flexibility, setting them apart from competitors.
However, if I were to pinpoint a minor drawback, it would be their dynamic response. In louder passages, especially during piano or guitar recordings, there can be a slight compression effect that may lead to a muddier mid-range. Despite this, these nuances are largely subjective and depend on personal taste and specific applications.
Overall, the OC818s are a remarkable investment, offering unmatched versatility and quality. Whether for singer-songwriters, acoustic performances, or even more complex setups, these microphones deliver outstanding results across the board. They truly are a remarkable addition to any recording arsenal.
