Customer Review Summary
The Austrian Audio OC818 Black Dual Set Plus has proven to be an exceptional choice for my recording needs. The microphone delivers a remarkably neutral sound with a pleasant coloration that enhances the overall quality. While the side frequency response may not be perfectly linear—especially in figure-eight mode—this is a common trait among microphones.
One of the standout features is the ability to record both capsules simultaneously, offering unmatched versatility. This functionality allows for post-recording adjustments to polar patterns, which is incredibly beneficial for addressing spatial issues or ensuring that low frequencies don’t overshadow higher ones. For its price, the OC818 is a powerful tool that I intend to use for every recording session.
In terms of sound quality, it closely resembles the renowned AKG C-414, making it a strong contender in the market. The separate output for the rear of the capsule is a brilliant addition, providing unparalleled flexibility. However, I must express my preference for electronic switches for polar patterns and filters, as the mechanical switches on the OC818 can be cumbersome and difficult to read in low light conditions.
Another drawback is the design of the elastic mounts. While they effectively dampen vibrations, their shape limits the positional adjustments that can be made, which can be quite frustrating during setup. Additionally, the carrying case could be more compact, as similar microphone sets from other brands come in smaller, more transport-friendly cases.
In summary, the OC818 microphones excel in sound quality and versatility, with the dual-output feature being a standout highlight. However, the mechanical switches are inconvenient, the elastic mounts leave much to be desired, and the case could be improved. Overall, I highly recommend these microphones for anyone looking for quality and adaptability in their recordings.
