Customer Review Summary

The Schoeps Mono Set MK 4 – CMC 1 U is an exceptional microphone that truly excels in live recordings, particularly for unamplified acoustic music and choral singing. The craftsmanship is impeccable, and the sound quality is nothing short of excellent; it captures a wide range of harmonics while delivering both warmth and brilliance in tone.

During my initial tests, I arranged the microphones with a 25 cm distance between the capsules and a 90° angle between the axes. Connecting them to a Sound Devices MixPre-3, I found that my voice was perfectly recorded from a 50 cm distance. Interestingly, I noticed a faint background noise through my studio headphones, which turned out to be just the ambient city noise I hadn’t noticed before. This made a compelling impression on me, as the microphones handled even distant sounds, like an aircraft flying overhead, with remarkable clarity.

These microphones open up a whole new world of sound, as noted by a sound engineer friend, and I wholeheartedly agree. They are compact yet possess the modularity of the Collette series, making them versatile for various recording situations, including MS recordings for music and ambience. The build quality is outstanding, and despite their small size, they deliver an incredibly detailed sound with impressive specifications.

Whether used as a main microphone, for string support, or as a piano support, the Schoeps Mono Set MK 4 – CMC 1 U outshines many competitors. Choosing Schoeps over brands like Neumann or Sennheiser is ultimately a matter of personal taste, and for my preferences, they are in a league of their own. This is the fourth unit I’ve purchased, and I anticipate acquiring more in the future.
