Customer Review Summary

The Sennheiser MKH 8090 is a truly exceptional microphone that stands out in my collection of MKH mics, including the MKH 8040. Its unique design offers the benefits of a cardioid microphone while incorporating omni characteristics, making it less susceptible to wind and handling noise.

When used in an OTRF Rycote basket, the MKH 8090 delivers the same natural and silky sound as the MKH 8040, but with an even smoother central image, which is particularly beneficial for film sound. This microphone is highly recommended for capturing quiet sounds, background noise, sound effects, and foley work, maintaining an impressive noise floor and frequency response.

The wide cardioid pattern provides enough focus to avoid a “washed out” sound while still offering an open characteristic that is perfect for ambience recording, especially when used as a stereo pair. I can easily see the MKH 8090 excelling as a room mic for orchestral recordings as well.

While I would prefer a replaceable capsule system like some competitors offer, the MKH 8090 is a top-tier microphone as it stands. Its compact size is a bonus, proving that good things do come in small packages. For sound designers or location audio professionals, this microphone is a must-have.

I’ve recently acquired two MKH 8090s to use as my main stereo pair for recording chamber music, ambient atmospheres, and voices in quality studio settings. Having previously owned a pair of MKH 8020s and an MKH 8050, I’ve been so impressed with their performance that I’m already planning to invest in a pair of MKH 8040s and an MKH 8060 for boom work.

These microphones are incredibly clear, detailed, noiseless, and versatile. They are especially effective when working with visual media, as they are nearly invisible. Although they are not the cheapest option on the market, the quality they provide justifies the investment. I highly recommend the Sennheiser MKH 8090 for anyone serious about sound recording, particularly as a mid microphone for mid-side recording setups alongside the MKH 8030.
