Having been in need of several vocal microphones while working with a tight budget, I decided to try the Audix F50 as an alternative to my usual favourites. The build quality is impressive, and these microphones are clearly designed to withstand the rigours of live performance. The XLR connector feels sturdy, and even after several drops from stands and rough handling, they continue to perform well. While the included clamp isn’t standard, it does the job, and a little adaptation is all that’s needed for European mic stands.

In terms of sound quality, the F50 excels, particularly for female vocals, delivering a smooth, clear, and detailed high end without being harsh. Compared to the Shure Beta 58, it might be perceived as slightly harsher, but this is subjective. For deeper male voices, a bit of EQ adjustment is necessary, but achieving a great sound is quite manageable. Overall, these microphones are a fantastic option for someone who plays gigs regularly but doesn’t want to spend a fortune. They significantly outperform other competitors in their price range and are particularly suited for smaller stage setups.

The feedback rejection is commendable, making them ideal for small venues and cafes. I personally found that my mid-range voice sounded great, and after using various Shure models, I find myself preferring the Audix F50, especially given its much lower price point. The highs may be slightly subdued, but this can easily be adjusted on the mixing console.
