Customer Review Summary

The Soyuz 017 Tube microphone is a remarkable investment that has significantly improved my recording experience. Initially, I hesitated due to the price, but the time saved on equalisation has proven invaluable; often, any necessary adjustments stem from the recording environment rather than the mic itself.

This microphone captures even the subtlest nuances without any harshness, delivering a smooth yet vibrant sound. It possesses a vintage charm while maintaining a modern edge, with beautifully soft highs that allow vocals to stand out naturally in the mix.

Its performance on acoustic guitars is exceptional, producing a rich, expansive sound, particularly when placed close to the source. Even in comparison to renowned models like the U47, it has delivered results that exceed my expectations. The warmth it brings to electric guitars is equally impressive. If I had to choose just one microphone from my collection, this would undoubtedly be it, as it has consistently impressed all the vocalists I’ve recorded.

The tonal richness is complemented by a lovely mid-range boost that works well with most voices, while the highs remain exquisitely soft. I also achieved excellent results recording a violin, showcasing its versatility.

However, I found it less suited for saxophones and some more nasal vocal types, as well as for sources with fast transients where a FET mic might perform better.

Overall, I am extremely satisfied with my choice; the build quality and finish are outstanding. If I had to keep just one mic, it would likely be this one or the 017 FET. Having tested it alongside other high-end microphones, including the famous Neumanns, I can confidently say it outperforms many of its peers, especially considering its price point. When paired with a Neve 1073 pre-amp and a good analog compressor, it essentially delivers a polished sound right from the outset, minimising the need for post-processing.

This microphone not only sounds incredible but is also visually stunning and built to last. The packaging is exceptional, featuring an extra tube, a beautiful wooden box, a power supply, and a sturdy holder. I have no complaints whatsoever. For anyone considering investing in a high-end microphone, the Soyuz 017 Tube is undoubtedly a worthy choice, and its increasing popularity in top studios across Nashville and L.A. speaks volumes about its quality.
