Customer Review Summary

The Schoeps V4 U USM Set B is an exceptional microphone that excels particularly in recording flute tones. Having compared it with other renowned models such as the Neumann U87, TLM 170, and the Mikrotek Gefell UM70, as well as the Oktava ML52.02 ribbon microphone, I found that the Schoeps stands out for its accuracy in sound reproduction.

While the Oktava has a pleasing quality in capturing the unique characteristics of the flute, it tends to lack brightness in the higher frequencies. On the other hand, the large diaphragm microphones, when set to cardioid, often enhance the sound in a way that can be unsatisfactory, introducing unwanted colouration in the highs.

In contrast, the Schoeps V4 U captures the flute’s sound with remarkable fidelity, even accommodating the altered sound radiation at lower pitches. This quality makes it suitable for a wide recording angle without compromising the original sound. My testing conditions included a small, soundproofed room with a recording distance of about one metre, and the performance was consistently impressive.

In concert hall settings, all tested microphones performed well, but the reliability and promise of Schoeps truly shine through. This microphone does not disappoint and delivers on its reputation for excellence.
