Schoeps MK 4 Cardioid Microphone Review
Having searched for several months for a microphone suitable for saxophone, I was pointed towards the Schoeps MK 4 by a knowledgeable advisor. I also tested the Sennheiser MKH 8050, but while both microphones are excellent and share a similar sound, I found the Schoeps to have a softer tone that appealed to me more.
The MK 4 delivers a neutral sound that leaves room for creativity, without imposing any particular tonal characteristics. It is free from noise and distortion, providing a warm and clear audio experience, making it perfect for saxophone recordings.
After a year and a half of use, my enthusiasm for this microphone remains undiminished. Its wide pickup angle has proven beneficial, especially when I stray too far from my main microphone during performances.
Four years later, I can confidently call it a dream microphone. It is incredibly versatile and forgiving with regard to the recording angle. On occasions, I opt to use the Schoeps with my RME UC interface for quick idea captures rather than waiting for my tube preamp to warm up. When I later apply a tube plugin to the recording, the difference between this and my Neumann U87 is so minimal that it often comes down to personal preference.
I am thoroughly satisfied with my investment in the Schoeps MK 4. The build quality is impeccable, and the sound is faithful, clear, and pure. It excels as a microphone for classical guitar, outperforming others in its price range. It transmits sound with neutrality across the frequency spectrum, without introducing any coloration or distortion, making it an honest representation of the source.
The Schoeps MK 4 is my top choice for various applications, including choir, speech, and instruments. I have never encountered issues with its sound quality when positioned correctly. In the realm of small-diaphragm microphones, it stands out as a first choice, and I am already considering acquiring a second unit. Overall, Schoeps represents a class of its own, delivering exactly what one expects in terms of quality.
