Product Review: Schoeps CMD 42

As a semi-professional recording engineer, I’ve been using the Schoeps CMD 42 to capture spoken word in an acoustically treated environment. This microphone allows for absolutely neutral recordings without the need for a preamp, which was my primary goal.

Utilising it alongside the MK4VP capsule and an RME Fireface UFX+ at 24Bit/96kHz, I found that a digital power adapter is necessary to connect the microphone to the audio interface. The CMD 42 outputs a digital stereo signal, which is fed through an AES/EBU input, making it essential to have the right setup for optimal performance.

Visually, the CMD 42 maintains Schoeps’ signature sleek and elegant design, integrating well with the Colette series. The microphone features a blue light upon powering up and briefly glows green when it recognises acoustic commands from the Schoeps control app. This app also allows for easy identification of the microphones by their serial numbers.

Initially, I was surprised by the low output level; however, the app allows for digital gain adjustments directly on the microphone, which helps in achieving sufficient monitoring levels. I did notice a slight increase in latency compared to traditional analogue monitoring, possibly due to the digital signal conversion required by my audio interface.

In terms of sound quality, the CMD 42 produces an incredibly natural and neutral tone, which is largely dependent on the capsule used. It surpasses even my most neutral analogue preamp in terms of clarity. Post-processing in my DAW is seamless, allowing me to achieve a warm and usable final product without any hint of digital coldness. I often run the final mix through an analogue processor to add a touch of warmth.

Overall, I am very pleased with my recordings using the CMD 42. This digital microphone truly expands my recording capabilities. It’s worth noting that while it eliminates the need for primary level adjustments due to its vast dynamic range, it does not replace the need for all preamps or coloured microphones; rather, it presents a new way of approaching digital recording. I’ve grown accustomed to the workflow with the CMD 42, finding it simplifies the recording process significantly—just switch it on and start capturing performances without distraction.
