Review of the Superlux TM58 Microphone
Having tested the Superlux TM58 alongside the Shure SM58 LC and Behringer SL 85S, I found that the Superlux is quite similar in appearance to the Shure, though it has some distinct differences in construction. The microphone’s basket is slightly elongated and has a larger thread diameter, with a softer foam inside compared to the Shure.
The sound signature of the TM58 is a bit louder, with an estimated 6 dB more output than the Shure, which gives it a noticeable presence. However, it does exhibit slightly more handling noise, particularly when tapping the cable, but this is not overly distracting. The pop and wind sensitivity are fairly comparable to the other models tested.
In terms of tonal quality, the Superlux has a somewhat nasal sound with more pronounced upper mids compared to the Shure, which is a subjective observation but worth noting. When analysing the frequency response, the TM58 does show a narrow dip around 5.6 kHz, while the Behringer has a similar dip just above 5 kHz. The Shure, on the other hand, exhibits a more gradual decline in frequency response without such dips.
Overall, the Superlux TM58 is remarkably good for its price point of £19. It feels robust and well-constructed, with a comparable weight to the other microphones. For those on a budget, it definitely offers good value and I would recommend it without hesitation.
