I have always aimed to manage without UAD, but my two-year-old PC frequently hit CPU limits during mixing in Pro Tools. Thus, I decided to invest in the UAD-2 Satellite, which I can also use with future PCs. Alongside the included Analog Classics Plus Bundle, I took advantage of the Christmas sale to purchase additional UAD plugins, which are essential since only UAD plugins are compatible with the Satellite.
The sound quality is astounding; the UAD plugins provide a more realistic experience than I ever anticipated. For instance, the 1176 FET compressors and Neve channel strips exhibit such authenticity that even at extreme settings, the output remains impeccable. Performance-wise, each UAD plugin has specific DSP requirements, which are clearly outlined on their website. The newer plugins can be quite demanding, so opting for the OCTO with its eight cores is advisable. This setup can handle numerous instances of plugins effortlessly, ensuring a stable performance.
After approximately two months of usage, I have found no drawbacks. The Satellite significantly reduces the load on my PC, allowing me to mix various musical styles with ease. Installation was a breeze—just plug it in, update the firmware, and I was ready to create music. The unit is solidly built and operates quietly, with no issues regarding USB disconnections on Windows 10 with USB 3.0 ports.
While the price is on the higher side, UAD is a renowned brand in music production, and the initial offering of plugins is somewhat limited. Additional plugins can be purchased directly from UAD, and their prices can escalate quickly. Nevertheless, I cannot imagine working without this device now, given the improved sound quality and professional edge it brings to my tracks. If you’re determined to create music, this is a worthwhile investment.
The clarity of the UAD plugins surpasses many competitors, especially in FX reproduction. It’s excellent for those who require mobility, as it seamlessly connects to laptops, making it ideal for on-the-go production. The performance is consistent, and while it is not interchangeable between PC and Mac, it remains a powerful tool for music production.
Overall, the UAD-2 Satellite USB Octo is a fantastic product that I highly recommend for anyone looking to utilise UAD plugins effectively. It offers a substantial boost in processing power, making it perfect for larger projects with multiple UAD plugin instances. Just keep in mind that while it’s a bit pricey, the investment pays off in terms of quality and efficiency.
