Sound Devices MixPre-6 II Review
Having reviewed various opinions, I can confidently say that the Sound Devices MixPre-6 II stands out as a remarkable audio recorder, particularly for field recording and sound design. The sound quality is exceptionally clear, with preamps that deliver professional-grade audio, even at high gain levels. Its robust build and compact design make it a reliable companion for both mobile and stationary recording, allowing for seamless transitions between different environments.
However, there are a few drawbacks to consider. The touch panel, while intuitive, can be a bit finicky, and the positioning of the on/off button is less than ideal, especially when the USB-C power supply is connected. Moreover, the XLR inputs, although made from high-quality Neutrik components, can be frustratingly difficult to disengage, which may lead to concerns about wear over time.
Power management is another area where the MixPre-6 II could improve. The included battery compartment for AA batteries is inadequate for extended use, necessitating the purchase of additional power solutions like a power bank or a more expensive Sony battery adapter. While using a USB power bank can provide ample recording time, it’s an additional investment that users should consider.
The device excels in versatility, being able to record up to 32-bit and 192 kHz, which significantly enhances sound manipulation without sacrificing quality. However, it may not fully replace a traditional audio interface for studio recording due to some latency issues and limited output options.
In summary, the MixPre-6 II is a high-quality, compact recording device that is perfect for professionals in the audio field. While it has some quirks and requires additional accessories for optimal use, its sound quality and performance make it a worthwhile investment for anyone serious about field recording.
