Genelec 8050 BWM Review

Having previously relied on the Yamaha HS-80 as my reference monitors, I always appreciated their linear representation and frequency response. However, after years of mixing, I felt that my results could be improved with higher-quality monitors. My experiences in various studios with brands like Adam, Neumann, and Focal always pointed me towards Genelec as the gold standard in monitor accuracy across genres.

After much deliberation and research, I opted for the 8050 model over the 8040, desiring an extended frequency range in the lower bass. Initially, I was concerned that these monitors might overpower the bass due to their placement near a wall, and I feared there would be a significant adjustment period coming from the Yamahas. Fortunately, both worries proved unfounded!

In all honesty, I was blown away by the performance of the 8050s. They excelled in clarity and definition, providing an impressive sense of depth in imaging and allowing for extensive frequency adjustment. I would wholeheartedly recommend them to anyone in need of studio monitors. While the price is on the higher side, I have no regrets; purchasing the 8050s in their stunning white finish was the best decision for my studio.

These monitors surpass the Yamaha HS-80 in terms of linearity and balance. I found the sound profile instantly familiar, yet the clarity across all frequencies, especially in the bass, has made me feel I’ve finally found my perfect studio monitor. Working with them has been a joy, and they are well-shielded against static noise, look fantastic, and feature an auto-standby mode after half an hour of inactivity. The sound is so quiet when idle that there’s no unwanted hum.

As a producer predominantly working in Hip Hop, Pop, and electronic beats, but also dabbling in acoustic and alternative music, I can confidently say these monitors handle every genre, be it orchestral, rock, or vocals, with ease.

In terms of design, the rounded shape reduces bulkiness, making them visually appealing. However, adjusting the dip switches at the back can be a bit cumbersome, as they are somewhat recessed. The bass port also doubles as a handle, which is a clever touch.

Regarding performance, the 8050s are impressive HiFi speakers. The larger tweeter and waveguide significantly enhance directivity compared to the 8040s, providing a clear and detailed soundstage. The SPL is more than adequate for my untreated 15m² room, and I found that the 8050s are capable of delivering loud volumes without triggering the limiter. Although the lower frequency response is stated as 35Hz, it’s closer to 40Hz in practice, and a subwoofer may be necessary for full-range material.

Overall, the Genelec 8050 BWM is a fantastic investment for anyone serious about audio production or high-fidelity listening. They perform exceptionally well across multiple uses, and for me, they have proven to be an invaluable addition to my studio setup.
