Customer Review Summary

The AEA R84 is an exceptional ribbon microphone that has significantly improved my recording experience, especially for electric guitar. It effectively eliminates harsh, cold, and metallic tones that can be quite undesirable, transforming my recordings from feeling inadequate to sounding impressive.

This microphone truly delivers a warm and soft sound, making it perfect for brass instruments and room ambience, and it’s worth experimenting with for vocal recordings as well. I have found it to be the best ribbon microphone I’ve tried, consistently providing a balanced audio quality compared to other competitors.

When recording string instruments such as violin, cello, and viola da gamba, the AEA R84 produces a delicately rich sound that is simply divine. However, it is important to note that the microphone has a low output, requiring two preamplifiers to achieve the desired level. My first preamp maxes out at 72db, which isn’t quite enough, so I use an additional 28db preamp to adjust the volume accordingly, and the results have been outstanding.

Overall, investing in this microphone has been worthwhile, and anyone contemplating the purchase will likely find it to be a rewarding choice.
