Customer Review Summary
The Universal Audio SD-5 microphone is impressively robust and notably larger than typical bass drum microphones.
Its raw sound is reminiscent of the EV20, providing a punchy and powerful bass drum tone. This feature is fantastic for achieving a solid, “bony” sound, and the various modelling options allow for significant sound shaping post-recording. While an EQ could achieve similar results, the ease and speed of using the SD-5’s built-in models is a significant advantage.
The microphone excels in capturing the low frequencies, particularly when paired with another microphone for higher spectrum sounds. The software layer enhances its capabilities, making it a versatile tool for any recording environment. Although the raw quality may not surpass the excellent SP-1 models in the same series, it still delivers commendable performance.
Being able to alter the sound type after recording is incredibly practical, saving the day on multiple occasions. The variety of microphone models available is impressive, with the sub-microphone being a delightful surprise that adds depth when doubling tracks and adjusting the blend delicately.
Ultimately, the SD-5 transforms into what feels like five high-quality microphones when used with the Hemisphere plug-in from AUD. While the original microphones are not 100% emulated, they achieve a high percentage of authenticity, making the SD-5 an ideal choice for small studios or home setups, offering exceptional value for the price of a single high-quality bass microphone.
