Soundman OKM II Classic/Studio A3 Review

Having replaced my old microphones with the Soundman OKM II Classic/Studio A3, I am thoroughly impressed with their performance. The recording quality remains exceptional, enabling clear and immersive binaural recordings that feel incredibly realistic, especially when listened to through headphones. These mics are remarkably discreet, allowing for unobtrusive recordings in various settings.

I’ve successfully used them for capturing ambient sounds, such as bird calls and environmental noises, either by placing them on hard surfaces or creatively using them as binaural mics mounted in a salad bowl. They’re particularly well-suited for use with DSLR cameras, where they can easily capture high-quality sound. The addition of the A3 adapter enhances compatibility with a range of audio devices, including those lacking built-in mic power.

While the microphones do exhibit some background noise, which can be addressed through software, their overall sound reproduction is impressive. The spatial stereo effect they produce is remarkable, mimicking human hearing very closely. They’re lightweight and easy to wear, resembling regular headphones, which makes them perfect for discreet field recordings.

However, care must be taken with the cables, which are somewhat fragile and might require gentle handling. The included clips for securing the mics can be a bit inadequate, as the microphones may dislodge during movement. Despite these minor drawbacks, the overall build quality and sound fidelity of the capsules themselves are commendable.

In conclusion, the Soundman OKM II Classic/Studio A3 is an outstanding choice for anyone looking to create high-quality binaural recordings affordably. Their unique design and functionality make them a valuable tool for capturing immersive audio experiences.
