Customer Review Summary

The MXL CR77 is an exceptional microphone that stands out for its unique sound and aesthetic appeal. Although I am not a microphone expert, I have found it to be a fantastic addition to my recording setup, particularly for voiceovers and live performances.

The microphone has a very distinct presence, especially in the high frequencies, which can be noticeable but not unpleasant. This treble boost works well in live settings, enhancing clarity without sounding overly sharp. However, in a studio environment, some EQ adjustments may be necessary to achieve the desired tonal balance.

It is quite gain-hungry, but I was able to achieve a strong signal when used with various recording devices, including mixers. The proximity effect is pronounced and adds a pleasing warmth to vocal recordings, allowing it to cut through background noise effectively.

Construction-wise, the MXL CR77 feels robust and high-quality, with a weighty build that inspires confidence. While it does pick up handling noise due to the lack of decoupling from the stand, the overall sound quality is impressive, with a clear and crisp output that rivals more established brands.

In terms of versatility, it performs admirably for both vocal recordings and live singing, particularly when paired with instruments like the piano. Its aesthetic appeal also makes it a great choice for visual projects where the microphone is visible. Overall, the MXL CR77 has exceeded my expectations and is a valuable addition to my microphone collection.
