Customer Review Summary
The Mojave MA-201fet VG is an exceptional microphone, primarily used for vocals in genres such as musical and schlager. It offers a distinctive tonal colour that complements these styles beautifully, with overtone presence that is pleasing without being intrusive. Unlike many pricier microphones, it requires minimal EQ adjustments to achieve a great sound. While those seeking absolute neutrality may want to look elsewhere, for many, this microphone represents a new benchmark in quality.
With David Royer behind its design, the reputation for quality is well-founded. Although it lacks some features like a low-cut filter or adjustable polar patterns, the sound quality more than compensates for these omissions. It delivers high sound quality with quick and precise transient response, producing a large, warm sound that is both professional and versatile. It excels with rock vocals, acoustic guitars, and amp pickups, compatible with various preamps, including 1073-style, ISA One, and UAD.
The build quality and design are top-notch, with a compact shock mount that allows for close positioning, ideal for studio setups. While I initially preferred a black version, the vintage grey is still aesthetically pleasing, even if it may appear a bit cheap to some. Overall, this microphone stands out as one of the best options under £3000 for vocal performance, having significantly outperformed many others in the £500 to £2000 range when tested against my voice.
However, it’s worth noting that issues can arise; shortly after the warranty expired, I experienced unwanted hum due to a defect in the microphone socket. Despite attempts to seek a resolution through customer service, I encountered difficulties and ultimately had to rely on a local music shop for repairs, which were handled at no cost to me. This aspect was disappointing, but it does not overshadow the excellent performance and value this microphone provides.
