Customer Review Summary

Heil Sound PR31 BW Review

Having previously used Heil microphones such as the PR30 and PR40, I was eager to try the PR31 due to its more compact and lightweight design. In direct comparison to the PR30, the PR31 delivers precise and powerful sound reproduction, making it easy to position within a mix. The microphone’s directional characteristics effectively minimise feedback issues, even in challenging environments like a six-piece party band or a loud thrash metal setting.

The stability and adjustability of the mount are commendable, though I do wish it came with a transport case, especially given its price point. The dynamic capsule offers brilliant sound quality, efficiently rejecting unwanted noise from the sides, which significantly reduces the action required at the mixing desk. It performs exceptionally well in front of guitar amps and drums, making it a solid choice for live performances.

However, the PR31 does have some drawbacks. While it sounds clean and defined, it tends to get lost in the mix compared to other microphones like the Shure SM57 or Beyerdynamic M201, primarily due to its less pronounced highs and slightly overemphasised mids. This may require some equalisation to balance out the sound. Additionally, I would hesitate to recommend it for very loud stages, as it can struggle with feedback issues, similar to other Heil models.

In conclusion, while the PR31 offers great sound quality and impressive off-axis rejection, its tonal colouration may not suit everyone’s taste. It is relatively expensive compared to other options that provide similar audio quality. Nevertheless, it remains a valuable addition to my microphone collection, particularly for its performance with drums and brass instruments, and I plan to continue using it in the future.

Overall, the Heil Sound PR31 BW is worth a try for those looking for a versatile microphone, but consider your specific needs and the environment where it will be used.
