Review of the Haun MBC660 L Pair Microphones

I must say, the Haun MBC660 is an exceptional microphone at an incredibly low price. However, it’s not a versatile all-rounder. The frequency curve reveals a steady bass roll-off starting from around 600 Hz, with a treble boost that varies between 2.5 and 8 kHz depending on the angle of incidence. The matte black finish and carefully engraved serial number give it a premium feel, although the packaging could use improvement.

In practical use, I found it ideal for acoustic guitar recordings. The bass roll-off compensates for the proximity effect, resulting in a near-perfect sound profile that leans towards brilliance with a lovely silvery shimmer. However, when used as the main pair for choir recordings, it lacks sufficient low-frequency content, making it less suitable. As a supporting microphone, it can work well if you’re looking for some presence boost.

While recording female vocals, the sound can come off as somewhat flat and occasionally shrill, necessitating significant EQ adjustments to correct the tonal balance. On the flip side, these microphones shine on acoustic guitars, pianos, and as overheads for drums, offering clear and detailed sound without the need for a -10 dB pad, which is a plus compared to some competitors.

Some users have noted that the MBC660s provide a very natural sound, capturing the essence of the instruments with minimal coloration. Nonetheless, there are reports of pulsating noise issues, which can detract from the experience. Fortunately, they are well-constructed and deliver sound quality far exceeding expectations for this price range.

While these microphones don’t compete with high-end brands like Neumann, they provide around 80% of that quality at a fraction of the price. They are particularly good for overhead applications and capturing acoustic instruments. However, they do require a decent preamp due to their low output level, and some low-frequency boost might be necessary for certain applications.

In conclusion, the Haun MBC660 L Pair is a fantastic choice for those seeking excellent sound quality at an unbeatable price. Just keep in mind the specific tonal characteristics and limitations, especially regarding low frequencies.
