Customer Review Summary
The Audio-Technica AT8022 is a versatile microphone that excels in field recording, thanks to its battery operation and impressive sound quality. However, it may not be the best choice for concert recordings due to its somewhat limited frequency response and the inherent rigidity of its back-to-back microphone design, which restricts positioning flexibility.
While the included cables are of subpar quality and somewhat short, this issue can be easily remedied with a higher quality cable purchased separately. Once set up correctly, the AT8022 delivers an exceptional auditory experience, offering a soundstage reminiscent of binaural recordings. The tonal quality is rich and velvety, likely attributed to the FET transistor in its input stage.
The microphone boasts a very low noise level, allowing for high gain without introducing hiss, making it suitable for various recording devices. Its high sensitivity captures even the faintest sounds distinctly, including subtle noises like breathing from 30 cm away.
Although it performs beautifully in outdoor environments, some users have noted that it may not hold up as well for music recordings, with a sound profile that can lean towards mid-range dominance. Additionally, the microphone’s head can feel a bit heavy when mounted, affecting its balance. Overall, the AT8022 is a strong contender for fieldwork, recommended for its excellent performance and longevity, with a battery life of up to 700 hours.
