Customer Review Summary

The Audio-Technica AT 4021 is a superb microphone that excels in a variety of recording situations. Whether capturing string instruments, pianos, or as the main stereo mics for choirs, it consistently delivers excellent sound quality. Its capability to handle high sound pressure levels makes it suitable for recording percussive instruments as well.

While it may not be as neutral as a Neumann KM184, it comes remarkably close, often offering a slightly more pronounced sound that can be beneficial for certain recordings. The tonal quality is particularly natural, especially for string instruments, and it performs exceptionally well for vocals across all frequencies.

However, it is advisable to use a pop filter or windscreen due to the microphone’s sensitivity. In direct comparisons, the AT 4021 shows a more linear frequency response and greater headroom than lower-priced alternatives, making it an impressive choice for its price range.

Its discreet design and high build quality make it suitable for outdoor use, although additional wind protection is recommended as the included foam windscreen is only effective indoors. The microphone is a fantastic option as a first cardioid mic or as an additional microphone for various studio applications.

Though some users may find the price a bit steep compared to other models from the same manufacturer, in practical use, the AT 4021 proves to be a superior choice with its robust output level and overall sound quality.

That said, there are mixed opinions regarding its performance in specific situations, such as with high-hat recordings, where some have reported unsatisfactory results compared to other microphones. Nevertheless, when used appropriately, the AT 4021 can yield impressive results and is well worth considering for a range of applications.
