Customer Review Summary

Schoeps Stereo-Set MK 5 is an impressive investment for anyone serious about capturing high-quality audio. After extensive testing alongside a professional audio colleague, I found the mics to exhibit low self-noise and remarkable transparency right from the start. They excel at capturing subtle sounds without any unwanted emphasis or imbalance, resulting in an accurately blended soundfield.

Utilising both the omni and cardioid settings for a range of applications—including close acoustic instruments, small ensembles, and large choirs—I achieved excellent results in omni mode. The careful placement in both direct and reverberant fields proved to be crucial, and I was so satisfied that I opted against purchasing a dedicated set of free field specified capsules.

The sound quality of the Schoeps is distinctly richer in detail compared to competitors, such as Neumann’s KM184. The build quality, including the clamps and windshields, is also notably superior, reflecting Schoeps’ high standards.

Additionally, the CMC6 preamps can be easily plugged into the desired XLR socket without the need for extra cables, making them highly practical for spontaneous recordings with a portable recorder.

For those who need versatility and can only invest in one premium pair of microphones, the Schoeps Stereo-Set MK 5 stands out as an excellent choice. It offers a flat frequency response with extremely low noise and distortion, capturing sounds with remarkable clarity. In particular, the cardioid mode delivers a smoother sound profile compared to the MK4 capsules, making it a very favourable option for various recording scenarios.
