Warm Audio WA-87 R2 Review
Having used the Warm Audio WA-87 R2 primarily for voiceovers in a moderately acoustically treated room, I found it to deliver a warm and rounded sound. Initially, I felt it sounded somewhat muted compared to other mics like the Sennheiser MKH416 and Neumann TLM 103, which are known for their clarity. However, with slight EQ adjustments, particularly at higher frequencies, the WA-87 R2 shines with a clear and airy presence.
This microphone excels in capturing vocals, providing excellent mid and high frequency presence without being overly aggressive. It sits well in mixes, although it does have a higher sensitivity, which means careful attention is needed to manage background noise. I appreciate its ability to handle room resonances gracefully, which is a significant advantage over some other large diaphragm mics.
In terms of build quality, the WA-87 R2 feels robust and professional. The microphone and its suspension mount are well-constructed, though the wooden case could feel a bit more premium. It has a natural sound profile with a slight emphasis on high frequencies, making it versatile enough for various applications, including as an overhead mic for drums or acoustic instruments.
While it may not be a Neumann U87, the WA-87 R2 offers remarkable sound quality for its price point, making it an excellent choice for both vocal and instrumental recordings. Overall, it’s a fantastic microphone that balances warmth with musicality, and I highly recommend it to anyone seeking a reliable and versatile recording tool.
