The DPA ST2006C
The recordings produced exhibit a full spectrum of sound, delivering rich lows and exceptionally crisp highs. I recommend angling the microphones upwards rather than pointing them directly at the source, as this technique helps to cohesively blend an ensemble together. In post-production, a touch of EQ can be applied if necessary.
While the small preamps do exhibit a slight tendency towards a muddy sound—more positively described as warm or euphonic—I find that a bit of EQ adjustment typically achieves my desired sound. Occasionally, the capsules can sound a touch harsh in the 2-4k range, but again, this is easily rectified with EQ.
In conclusion, the DPA ST2006C offers excellent value for money. Although there are superior microphones available, they come at a higher price. The outcomes for various applications, including choir productions and field recordings for documentaries, have been outstanding. They also excel in chamber music recordings, whether for string quartets or woodwind ensembles.
These microphones have become my preferred choice alongside the MK2S, proving to be portable and reliable for both natural and urban outdoor recordings. This is indeed a worthwhile investment, and I have no regrets about my decision. They are, without a doubt, one of the best-sounding small diaphragm condenser microphones with a cardioid pattern in this price range, and the included Pelicase is a fantastic bonus.
