Customer Review Summary
The Sontronics Orpheus is a remarkable microphone that has pleasantly surprised me since I first discovered the brand. The value for money it offers is incredible, making it an excellent choice for various applications.
I initially selected the Orpheus for recording acoustic guitar, and after purchasing a pair, I found them to be equally impressive when used as room mics or overheads. The quality of sound they capture is outstanding, with no harshness, muddiness, or cheap tones.
Furthermore, the Orpheus serves as a fantastic alternative for voice-over recordings, especially when paired with a good preamp. In comparing it with my AKG C414, I found the Orpheus to be superior across different sources, including acoustic guitar, vocals, and percussion. It has become a staple in my studio, and I wholeheartedly recommend it.
The versatility of the Orpheus is also noteworthy, featuring omni, cardioid, and figure-of-eight patterns. It produces a bright and clear sound, distinctly vintage in character. While it may not satisfy those seeking absolute precision, it excels in delivering a poetic and signature sound.
Additionally, the aesthetic appeal of the microphone is striking and adds a professional touch to recording sessions. The only minor drawback is the quality of the metal; while it is acceptable for the price, it does not reach the highest standards. Nonetheless, the Orpheus is a microphone with a strong personality, and I intend to keep it for a long time.
